Common Artwork Upload Mistakes to Avoid

Md Abdur Rahman

Uploading artwork for DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing might seem simple, but a few small errors can cause major print problems — from blurry designs to missing colors or unwanted backgrounds. At DTF 2 Print, we ensure your files print with sharp details and vibrant color, but proper file preparation is the key to perfection.

In this article, we’ll go over the most common artwork upload mistakes people make and show you exactly how to avoid them before submitting your designs.

1. Submitting Low-Resolution Files

This is one of the biggest issues we see.
When artwork is designed at low resolution (under 150 DPI), it looks fine on your screen but prints blurry or pixelated on fabric.

Solution:
Always save your artwork at 300 DPI (dots per inch) or higher.
If you’re ordering a 22 × 24″ gang sheet, make sure your design file is set to that exact size at 300 DPI.

Learn more about correct setup on our Artwork Upload Guidelines page.

2. Using the Wrong Color Mode

Most designers forget that digital screens use RGB, while DTF printers operate in CMYK color mode. The difference can cause color shifts — bright neon shades may print dull or darker than expected.

Solution:
Before saving, convert your artwork to CMYK mode in Photoshop or Illustrator.
This ensures accurate color translation to the final print.

3. Uploading Files with Backgrounds

One of the most common mistakes is uploading images with white or colored backgrounds instead of transparent ones. This causes an unwanted box or outline to appear around the design once it’s pressed.

Solution:
Always use PNG files with transparent backgrounds.
Avoid JPGs — they don’t support transparency and will leave background boxes.

4. Forgetting to Convert Fonts to Outlines

If your design includes text and you don’t convert it to outlines, it may not display correctly on our systems. Missing fonts can alter your design completely.

Solution:
Convert text to outlines (vector paths) before saving.

  • In Illustrator: Type → Create Outlines

  • In Photoshop: Right-click text layer → Convert to Shape

5. Uploading Files in the Wrong Format

DTF 2 Print accepts several professional file types, but not all formats print well. Avoid formats that reduce quality or don’t preserve transparency.

Accepted formats:

  • PNG (best for transparent designs)

  • TIFF (best for large, detailed artwork)

  • PDF/AI (best for vector or text-based designs)

❌ Avoid JPG, GIF, or BMP — they lower image quality and flatten important details.

6. Not Designing at Actual Print Size

Sometimes customers create designs too small, assuming they’ll be enlarged during printing. This leads to distortion and blurry edges.

Solution:
Design at actual print size from the start.
If you need your logo printed at 10 inches wide, your canvas should be set to 10″ wide at 300 DPI.

You can preview and scale correctly with our Build a Gang Sheet Tool.

7. Overlapping or Crowding Designs

When creating a gang sheet, it’s tempting to fit as many designs as possible. But placing them too close together or overlapping can cause cutting issues or missing parts of your artwork.

Solution:
Leave ¼ inch of space between designs.
This makes trimming and pressing easier without damaging nearby transfers.

For efficient layouts, use our Upload Your Pre-Made Gang Sheet tool.

8. Forgetting Bleed or Safe Margins

If your design extends to the edge of the sheet, a small trim shift could cut off parts of your image.

Solution:
Add a 0.125-inch bleed area beyond the edge and keep important elements inside the safe zone.
This ensures your full artwork prints perfectly without loss.

9. Submitting Files with Hidden Layers

Hidden layers or template guides in your file might still be visible to the printer, especially if you export without flattening. This can lead to faint outlines, extra marks, or ghost images on your print.

Solution:
Flatten your artwork and remove all hidden or unused layers before uploading.
Keep only the visible design layer.

10. Naming Files Incorrectly

Files like “finaldesignnew3.png” or “image(45).jpg” slow down production and risk confusion when processing multiple designs.

Solution:
Use clear, simple names that describe the file:

BrandName_DesignName_Size.png Example: DTF2Print_Logo_11x12.png

11. Ignoring Transparency in White Areas

White in your artwork isn’t always printed — sometimes, it’s transparent depending on how your file is set up. If you use off-white shades or semi-transparent effects, they might not print correctly.

Solution:
Use pure white (#FFFFFF) for visible white areas, and transparent layers for clear spaces.
If unsure, include a note when uploading your design through our Artwork Upload Page.

12. Uploading Files Too Large or Too Small

Oversized files can take long to process, while undersized designs may not print at high quality.

Solution:
Keep file sizes under 100MB for fast uploading, and design with proper proportions at 300 DPI.

13. Forgetting to Check Edges and Shadows

Soft drop shadows or glows can blend poorly when printed on colored garments.

Solution:
Use solid, clean outlines or adjust opacity to avoid faded edges.
Test your design on both light and dark backgrounds digitally before printing.

14. Not Reviewing the Preview Before Checkout

Skipping the final preview is a common mistake. Sometimes, images get uploaded sideways, cropped, or misaligned.

Solution:
Always review your preview in the Build a Gang Sheet Tool before completing checkout.
This quick step ensures your final print matches your layout perfectly.

15. Ignoring Our Guidelines

Our Artwork Upload Guidelines exist to make sure your transfers look flawless. Following them saves time, prevents reprints, and guarantees top-tier results.
